Retro Game Show Host(Okay, so you don’t actually do either of the things suggested in the title. But it is a game show!)

I’ve posted about game shows before – or maybe it was reality television? The point is that I have a private love of these things. Oh don’t get me wrong, they’re a complete waste of time and I don’t usually watch. But when I’ve been working all day and need something to relax? Yeah…then they’ve got me hooked!

And what could be better than combining my professional passion with my lazy guilty pleasure?

Hence, today’s lesson plan from Game On!:

The Sexual Health Auction

OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  1.  Clarify and explain their attitudes, opinions and values regarding sexual health.
  2. Describe one factor that can impact one’s sexual decisions.

RATIONALE:
Values are derived from a variety of sources and can impact one’s sexual decisions and behaviors. According to the Sexuality Information and Education Council of the United States (SIECUS), a sexually healthy adult will live and express one’s sexuality in line with one’s personal values. Therefore, individuals need opportunities to explore their own values in conjunction with sexual decisions. The Sexual Health Auction provides participants with a chance to examine, discover and discuss how values can impact decisions about sexual health.

Providing participants with a concrete way to consider and weigh values is a really great approach to bringing something potentially vague like “value” into focus. I ran a similar activity for a few years with a colleague who really got into it, running an actual auction. It was interesting to see the youth start glance over a sheet of sexual values and jump into the exercise – but then realize that really, they couldn’t get all of their values. They had to pick which ones were the most dear to them. They usually took the activity very seriously – far more seriously than I had expected them to. The realism of the auction experience helped, I think.

This activity in Game On! will get you started on your very own version of the auction – and I’m sure you won’t be disappointed!
